iRecord St Helena: a Data-driven Approach, Empowering Bird Conservation
Darwin Local 90 is a collaborative project with the St Helena National Trust (SHNT) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), funded by the Darwin Plus Local Fund. This project focuses on enhancing the collection, access, and utilisation of bird data on St Helena. By consolidating all bird records into iRecord St Helena, we aim to create a robust data management system that will support SHNT’s monitoring programs. iRecord St Helena ensures that the information will facilitate accessible and interpretable datasets. The insights derived from this data will inform the Trust’s bird strategy and management practices
The St Helena Research Institute manages the DL00090 project, overseeing technical and financial reporting, and coordinating project activities.
SHNT actively contributes to the project’s design and implementation, ensuring it meets their organisational needs. They bring their expertise to the project, and participate in project activities, including training and workshops.
RSPB provides advice and guidance on project implementation as a working group member. They support project activities and outcomes by facilitating workshops and providing training in data management best practices, data science, and policy and procedures.
Project Components
The project aims to develop, improve and implement biological records data management policies and procedures within SHNT and St Helena Government. A Governance framework will be established, agreed upon by core partners, SHNT, and SHG, for iRecord St Helena that is clear on the benefits for the partners, island and individuals.
audit will be conducted to identify data gaps, and the findings will be used to inform the bird data prioritisation for processing datasets. Ensuring data processing efforts are aligned with the priorities of SHNT, and then can be utilised to inform the SHNT’s bird strategy and management plan.
DPL00090 emphasises capacity building to enhance local expertise in bird data collection, management, and analysis. This involves training workshops, skill development sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives designed to empower local staff and stakeholders.
