Wildlife recording for education, research and decision making.

iRecord St Helena: Wildlife Recording for Research, Education, and Decision-Making was funded by the Darwin Plus Local fund. DPL00027 supported the continued development of iRecord St Helena following the inaugural funding from the EU BEST 2.0+ initiative.

DPL00027 focused on system development, ensuring that iRecord St Helena serves as an effective tool for environmental management. The project enhanced the platform’s capabilities by integrating historical datasets, expanding the species list to include marine species, and developing specialised survey forms. Additionally, the project improved the mapped output systems, allowing users to explore records with an overlay of St Helena’s National Conservation Areas.

Project Components

The DPL00027 project focused on enhancing iRecord St Helena as a vital tool for environmental management on the island. Key achievements included the integration of historical datasets, and the addition of new species and habitat maps. The development of specific survey forms streamlined data collection, and improvements to the mapped output systems allowed users to explore records.

The project focused on addressing priority needs through targeted biological recording and surveys. Key initiatives included the development of specialised survey forms to monitor tree disease and record seed collection activities by the Environmental Management Division.

Capacity building was a crucial component of the DPLUS27 project, aimed at enhancing local expertise and engagement in biodiversity conservation. The project delivered targeted training and outreach, including one-on-one sessions to guide users in the effective use of iRecord St Helena and the submission of data. Additionally, the project facilitated on-island capacity building through fieldwork with local experts, training in plant and invertebrate identification, and courses on GIS mapping.
